What Are Facial Differences?

Congenital Conditions

Present from birth, these conditions develop during pregnancy and affect facial structure, function, or appearance. They can range from minor differences to more complex conditions requiring ongoing care.

Acquired Differences

These develop later in life due to injury, illness, or medical treatment. While challenging, many people adapt well with proper support and treatment, often finding strength they never knew they had.

Three Common Facial Differences

Cleft Lip and Palate
Cleft Lip and Palate
These are openings or splits in the upper lip, the roof of the mouth (palate), or both. They result from incomplete fusion of the facial structures during early pregnancy and are among the most common birth defects.
Craniofacial Microsomia
Craniofacial Microsomia
Also known as hemifacial microsomia, this condition involves underdevelopment of the lower half of one side of the face. It primarily affects the ear and jaw but can impact other facial structures.
Acquired Facial Deformities
Acquired Facial Deformities
These are changes to the facial structure that occur after birth. They can result from trauma (like accidents or burns), diseases (like cancer), or surgical procedures to treat other conditions.
